Perhaps the most intriguing part about Astronautalis’ music is his voice, which earned him this year’s Best Male Vocalist in City Pages. His often gravelly-voice and rapid delivery, combined with his incredibly passionate, animated stage performance and complex lyrics always make for a one-of-a-kind show that he’s brought all around the world on tour. Recently, he came directly from a European Tour straight to First Avenue to join Get Cryphy at their Four Year Anniversary party. Needless to say, he was born to be on stage and doesn’t let anything get in the way of performing for a crowd. 2011 brought the release of his fourth and most recent album, This Is Our Science, his most focused and impactful release to date. Features from POS and Sims from Doomtree, Mike Weibe, and Tegan Quin (of Tegan and Sara) helped propel the album to a successful #41 spot on the Billboard Hip Hop charts, #43 on the Billboard Heatseekers Charts, #09 on the American iTunes Hip Hop Charts and #12 on the Amazon.com Hip Hop Charts. A trademark aspect of his live shows is his end-of-the-show freestyle where he takes subjects from the crowd and makes a freestyle rap off the top of his head for the fans, here’s hoping he treats the Soundset crowd to the same thing!
